Toronto police have arrested and charged a man in the 2022 shooting death of Ding Ping Wang, a breakthrough in a case that has spanned nearly four years and involved multiple public appeals.
Homicide investigators announced Tuesday that Justin Longshaw, 39, of Toronto, has been charged with first‑degree murder in connection with Wang’s death.
Wang, 31, was killed on Nov. 12, 2022, after police were called to the Midland Avenue and Passmore Avenue area in Scarborough for reports of an “unknown trouble.”
Officers arrived to find Wang inside a vehicle in a plaza parking lot. Police allege an unknown suspect approached the vehicle and shot Wang at close range, killing him at the scene.
“Mr. Wang was a husband. He was a father. He owned a [carpentry] business and worked hard to support his family and build a future for them,” Det. Sgt. Sajeev Nair of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit said at the time.
For months, investigators had no suspect description and few leads. The homicide investigation shifted in July 2026, when detectives released new security footage showing a man walking through the same area the day before the killing, following what investigators believe was the same route used on the night Wang was shot.
Police also released an artist’s rendering of the suspect, created with the help of an eyewitness who recently came forward.
Suspect believed to go by ‘Jay,’ linked to 2nd shooting
On Aug. 14, 2026, investigators released additional footage showing the same suspect in the months after Wang’s murder. Detectives said they believed the man went by the name “Jay.”
“I told you last time that your world is going to get smaller. Today, it’s going to get even smaller,” Det. Sgt. Nair stated during the August press conference.
Investigators also revealed the suspect may be connected to a March 10, 2023, attempted murder in the same Midland and Passmore plaza — a shooting that left another victim seriously injured. That connection remains under investigation.
Police have not yet clarified whether Longshaw is connected to the 2023 attempted murder, and investigators continue to examine whether the two cases intersect. The accused appeared in a Toronto court on Tuesday on a first-degree murder charge in Wang’s death.
Despite the arrest, detectives say they are still appealing for witnesses, video, or anyone who may have interacted with the suspect in the days surrounding the 2022 homicide or the 2023 attempted murder.
