At least 9 GTA cities elect new mayors

Night GTA cities have elected new mayors as the results of municipal elections are in across Ontario.

Mississauga elected Alvin Tedjo, beating out incumbent Carolyn Parrish and Bonnie Crombie while the long-serving mayor was ousted in Milton. Tom Dingwall beat incumbent Adrian Foster in Clarington.

Long-time Hamilton politican Andrea Horwath finished a distant third in her bid to be relected as Hamilton’s mayor. She lost to newcomer Keanin Loomis.

In Oakville, Rob Burton failed to win his sixth reelection. He was defeated by Jeff Knoll, who has been on city council since 2000.

Outgoing mayors in Ajax, Oshawa, Caledon and East Gwillimbury are not seeking re-election on Oct. 26, which meant all four cities are guaranteed to get new mayors Monday.

Ajax has elected Marilyn Crawford to be their new mayor after Shaun Collier announced his plans not to seek re-election in May.

In April, Caledon Mayor Annette Groves announced her retirement. In a video posted to social media, Groves said it was not an easy decision, but one made with “careful thought and a deep sense of gratitude.” Christina Early is currently in the lead to replace Groves as mayor.

In Oshawa, incumbent Dan Carter had sworn off seeking a third term as mayor. Tito-Dante Marimpietri will be the new leader in the Durham Region city.

East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson has also decided to end her public service career after spending 16 years as mayor.

Scott Crone will replace Hackson.
