One person is dead following a three-vehicle crash on Hwy. 401 in Scarborough, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The collision occurred late Sunday night in the westbound express lanes of Highway 401, west of Kennedy Road.
Investigators confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash, including a pickup truck and two passenger cars.
“The initial investigation indicates that a pickup truck collided with the rear of a sedan, causing the sedan to be pushed forward into the rear of an SUV,” the OPP stated in a release.
A 20-year-old from Stouffville, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The OPP said a second person was transported to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Police said the person was the driver but did not say which vehicle they were in.
The westbound lanes were closed for several hours as OPP officers investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision. Police said all affected lanes reopened at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant information is asked to contact the OPP.
